Get your vinyl collection back into life with a USB turntable
May 2009 - Aaron Mahoney

ATT023U

Home entertainment brand Akai has launched the latest addition to its product line up with a new range of USB Turntables. Models in the range enable users to play back their favourite vinyl records through their sound system, with the USB output providing a simple way to record and archive your record collection.

Offering two fully functional belt driven models, Akai’s latest range of turntables supports 33, 45 and 78 RPM playback speeds, and also features an adjustable pitch control, enabling users to adjust pitch levels on the fly. Additionally, the turntable’s anti-skating control feature works to minimize the ‘skating’ force that pulls the tonearm towards the centre of the record as it plays, thus preventing skipping for clear, balanced sound.

ATT022U

The highlight of the range is the ATT023U turntable, which features a unique direct recording function. This enables users to record their vinyl music directly to a USB hard drive – without using a PC. The ATT022U completes the range, which along with the ATT023U includes an S-shaped static balanced tonearm with detachable headshell, audio technica magnetic cartridge, built-in phono preamp, and included slip pad, allowing users to produce ‘scratching’ sounds and other special effects without damaging their records.

The turntable’s USB output provides a simple way to record and archive any record collection. The easy to use Audacity sound editing software lets users import their favourite tracks onto the computer’s hard drive, and then export into WAV or MP3 format, enabling easy transfer onto an iPod or CD. Soundsoap™ SE software is also included, allowing users to remove any pops, clicks or whistles.

Compatible with both PC & Mac, Akai’s turntable range is perfect for budding DJs who require an easy way to record their mixes as well as those who are looking to restore their classic vinyl records.

As at May 2009, the Akai ATT022U and ATT023U USB had a RRP of $349.95 and $449.95 respectively.
