How to successfully convert balanced to unbalanced
Feb 2004

Final product sounding a little lack-luster due to loss of data in your system is it? Converters having to do a bit much error correction? There is a solution you know....... and there is a proper way to connect your equipment.

Format conversion is becoming a larger problem. Even though it used to be quite a problem in the older analogue days before high impedance , voltage style inputs became common, it has again become very important due to varying digital standards and their ability to inadvertently loose bits of data through impedance mismatch. In order to convert a balanced input to an unbalanced input (and vice versa with outputs) Talia have produced two low cost format converters. The "Wally Dog" converts the output of an audio or digital device from 110 ohms to 75 ohms using a female XLR to BNC converter. The "Woolly Pig" operates in reverse converting an unbalanced BNC signal to a balanced male XLR output.

You should be able to purchase either of these converters from any good retailer for around $79 each (Australian dollars inc GST). They can be a big help and everybody involved with ENG or live recording should have at least two of each in their kit. If you can not get one from your local retailer, give the distributor (Quinto) a quick call on Ph.(03) 9558 9377.
