Who's made in China - they all are.
17-8-04

We have listened to lots of people in the industry, who previously made what have since become considered wild unsubstantiated promises that they do not and never will manufacture in China. Lets face it, Americans in particular are very pro American and super conscious of brand ownership and perceived manufacture, so they love to think everything is "Made in USA". It's the same back home. A lot of companies like to try and pass themselves off as being all Australian. The Gear Plus opinion is that, it's all hype, wank and marketing. We don't believe any of it is true, so we have come up with a challenge for the lot of them.

The Gear Plus challenge

We make this challenge to any and all companies involved in the audio visual industry - any manufacturer who can claim they do not get any part of their product line fully, partially manufactured or assembled in an Asian country, please send us your name and we will list it here on this page. Be assured, we are talking about components, boards, cases, knobs, switches, badges, anything.

There are very few, if any, who can make the claim of total in-house manufacture.

If your name is not listed below, we can only assume your products are not entirely manufactured by your company in it's native country of origin.

So take the challenge. Prove us wrong and we will list away.

Companies who manufacturer their products all in house in their own country.

  • Currently zero.

But wait, there's more

Some manufacturers have come back to us and suggested (rightly so) that there is no local Semiconductor / Parts industry, no electronics plastics industry etc etc etc and that basically we in Australia live in an ever diminishing electronics industry. It's all true (and was the main point of the article). But, just for the few who, may import the odd component, but still concentrate on building as much of the product as they can in Australia, we have come up with a place to list your name and your comments about what you build because, we understand the cost of your efforts and support you wholeheartedly.

Now, generally "Country of Manufacture" is determined as the place of "highest value added" aka, point of actual manufacture, aka "where the factory is"  irrespective of where the actual individual components are manufactured. But we must point out that, just because (as in some cases) the packaging costs more than the product, we do not accept it as being manufactured in Australia. The "Product" must be made in Australia.

Company Comments from manufacturer Comments from Gear Plus
Acoustic Concepts We totally manufacture in Australia for Australia and the world market a range of loudspeakers and enclosures. A number of our OEM customers export our product through out the world (eg. Osborn Loudspeakers, Redgum and the TAG group, to name a few). Once again, a number of the internal components would be made overseas but Acoustic Concepts are correct in the statement that, as an OEM manufacturer, 99% of what they make is Australian.
ARX ARX would come close to qualifying, as apart from our Ambience Series Loudspeakers (which come ostensibly from Taiwan but most probably China) all manufacturing is done in sunny Highett, Melbourne. Most likely a large number of their drivers are imported (especially compression drivers) and also the bulk of electrical components for amps, processors, etc. But other than that, these guys are very strong supporters of Australian Made.
LM Audio Our product is designed and manufactured in Australia. Bit like ARX or Prime, they build as much as they can in Aussie and should be thanked for it.
Lorantz   We would like Mike to get off his arse and send us something because he is probably damn close to being one of the few 100% true Aussie manufacturers. Hell, he even makes the cones for his drivers (something most overseas companies only dream of).
Prime Audio A large part of our product range is designed and manufactured in Australia. We fabricate all our own metal work and hand assemble in house. Anybody who is interested is welcome to visit the factory during working hours and see for themselves. These guys used to be exclusively Australian in manufacture. It has only been the recent trend that has seen them begin to import some product.
Quest Engineering At this moment in time, All Quest HPI range speakers are assembled in Australia (with Italian speakers). Two HPI models for a while even had Australian drivers. The Boxes are made in Geelong, painted in Bayswater, the front grills are made in Carrum Downs (by a company owned by a Vietnamese - Australian). The back panels are made in South Yarra and it's all assembled and tested by a bunch of ex roadies in Brunswick. The design is also Australian and has patentable technology to control cone excursion. The only part made in China is the Quest Engineering badge on the front if the grill. But there's more... All Quest sales brochures are printed by the printer a short walk from the office and the web site is also generated in Brunswick. The boxes are sent everywhere, so is it hard to do it in Australia? You bet it is! As for the rest of the range, The Peoples Republic of Questania. Mr Behringer is not the only man on a mission to start his own country and religion. PS Quest has an office and warehouse in Europe and even exports to Korea.
What more can we say. That seems to sum it up. And probably more openly than a number of other manufacturers.
Redgum Audio All amplifier, speakers and DAC parts (including PCB's) are in house designed, fully manufactured and assembled here in Australia. (Mostly in our Box Hill factory.) For example, steel chassis, front panels, all labels are produced in Australia by Australian companies. Speaker Boxes are manufactured by Acoustic Concepts in Mentone Even the veneer is real Australian grown red gum Must admit, Woodie (at Acoustic Concepts) does build some of the best boxes we have ever seen (bar nobody). They make it well worth the hangover generally gained by having lunch with him. No mention of the drivers though so, can only assume they come from overseas.
Elan Audio All equipment branded Elan Audio is 100% made in Western Australia. Some components are USA, Swiss and German made. Ten points to Poul Kirk because he has always been a staunch supporter of design and manufacturer in Australia. As far as we know his products have always contained as much Australian content as possible.
Rode   Now these guys read the site (we know because they told us they do), but yet they haven't listed their name here. We know they have a quality manufacturing plant in Oz and they do a lot of wonderful stuff. They should be listed here.

If you are an Australian company that manufacturers in Australia and don't have your product listed here, all we can say is that your marketing departments pretty slack.
