We are not certain but it's alleged the first city to set a speed limit was Warrnambool in Victoria. A strapping sixteen miles per hour. A lot of the cars around that time were steered with tillers like a yacht and they carried a sprag - an iron rod which was wedged into the ground should the car's engine fail going up a hill.
It seems that the government is trying to get us back down to this speed by introducing new speed laws all the time. They are obsessed with keeping us looking at our speedos and not concentrating on the road. This is killing road crews. How the hell can they be expected to hold a stubbie in one hand, answer nagging tour managers (on the mobile) with the other, light a cigarette and watch the speedo, all while they are driving the truck. It's impossible. So in our mind, the speedo should go.
Another thing that supports this idea is that, between september 2001 and september 2002, up to 28% of drivers killed on country roads had a blood alcohol reading over 0.05%. Obviously the reduction of speed is keeping these road crews on the road for much longer , forcing them to drink more, thereby increasing the risk of an accident. The speed limits need to be lifted so they can get to the gigs at a more reasonable pace. Logic tells us that 140k would be acceptable because that seems to be around where the governor comes in on your average hire truck.
